Education

 • Ph D, North Carolina State University at Raleigh
 • BS, University of Texas Austin

Teaching Interests

I enjoy teaching courses related to ecology and evolution, plant biology, and plant-animal interactions. I combine lecture, hands-on, discussion, and writing-based modalities.

Courses that I currently teach include:
General Ecology (BIOL 304)
Methods in Ecology and Evolution (BIOL 375 and 675)
Species Interactions (BIOL 494 and 593)
Independent Research (BIOL 480)

Research Interests

I am interested in the evolution of floral traits and reproductive strategies among animal-pollinated plants.

My lab aims to interpret how floral traits address the reproductive challenges and opportunities presented by interactions with animals, other plants, and the abiotic environment. I combine empirical work in the field, greenhouse, and lab with theory to address questions relevant to three general aspects of plant reproductive ecology, including: plant chemical ecology, the role of species interactions in plant reproduction, and floral strategies.

My fieldwork is based in southwest Colorado (San Juan and West Elk ranges and the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory) and the southern Appalachian Mountains of the Carolinas.

More information about my research program can be found on my Lab Website (jacobmheiling.weebly.com).
