I. POLICY STATEMENT

For University employees subject to the provisions of the State Human Resources Act (SHRA), Ðǿմ«Ã½ adheres to the North Carolina Office of State Human Resources (OSHR) . Secondary Employment is defined as any activity involving the production or sale of goods, the provision of services, the performance of intellectual or creative work for pay in either an employer/employee relationship or in a self-employment capacity such as an independent contract. The OSHR Secondary Employment Policy requires an employee to submit a Secondary Employment form and receive approval before engaging in any secondary employment that is not covered by the Dual Employment policy. Secondary Employment forms must be submitted electronically through the . 

Secondary employment approvals are valid for one year. If an SHRA employee continues to engage in external employment beyond that year, they must submit a new approval form annually. Additionally, an employee must submit a new request any time there are changes to their external employment—such as a new employer, different job duties, or changes in work hours.
